MEDIA REVIEWS 2026

‘a must-see for any horror fan this year.. one of my favourites at FrightFest’

5/5 Obscurity

‘Owen shows tremendous craft in delivering a tightly wound, claustrophobic nightmare on a small budget’

‘There’s so much ambition, and the cast gives their all, committing to something they know is special. Keep an eye on Owen; I can’t wait to see what he does next.’

7/10 Gary Gamble, Movie Hooker

‘I absolutely loved this microbudget horror, and its big reveal totally took me by surprise.’

‘sad, sinister and very, very scary…  you have to see Hoarder’

Peter Fuller. Kult Guys Keep

‘Owen brings his own gallow’s humour, while ensuring that the unfolding horror is also a human tragedy’

Anton Bitel, Projected Figures

‘I really liked Owen’s slow burn approach.. enter into the dark spirit of the movie; there’s a lot to like.’

David Dent, Bloody Flicks

‘The cast is excellent, the pacing is perfect. HOARDER is a thoroughly enjoyable horror, hitting all the right notes.’

‘an exciting and clever plot, full of twists and surprises’

Robyn Fraser, Gore in the Store

‘a highly tense and atmospheric story.. strong performances and impressive visual design’

4/5 David Gelmini, The Independent Horror Society

‘Director James Owen.. understands his subject well’

‘two impressive leads (actors)’

‘the design of the house pays off, building atmosphere and giving context to the real world tragedy of mental deterioration’

3/5 Jenny Komode, Eye for Film

‘thrives in tension.. thoroughly enjoyable.. With an ending that packs a punch’

‘the visual effects in Hoarder are also very impressive. Carnage and viscera splatter in ways that will attract the ever-present gore hounds who want to see its effective usage whilst the practical elements create toe curling moments that are increasingly entertaining as the story unfolds’

3/5 Film Hounds

‘an infectiously monstrous antagonist’

‘The absolute standout of Hoarder, is the set design.. visually striking and well realised despite the film’s modest budget.’

‘an interesting spin on medical horror’

Kat Hughes, Hollywood News

‘Owen starts with a distinctively British take on the Texas Chain Saw milieu’

‘Melissa womanfully crawls through tunnels… Sterne brings whiskery, crotchety eccentricity… Lanyon… returns from Owen’s Bite, and seems to be working up a senior scream queen rep’

Kim Newman, The Kim Newman Website

‘…a routine home visit takes a terrifying turn… A worthy follow up to Owen’s previous FrightFest hit Bite.’

Isabella Pettitt, Cherub Magazine

‘A really creepy film with vibes of Barbarian’

‘Definitely one to keep an eye on for the future’

Zara Mary, @scaryzaramary

‘A good British horror… Dark, Creepy and Mysterious… Really creative’

Simon Lewis, @terrorfix88
